Tank footprint versus volume

Gallons is the number on the box, the number in the shop and the number in every stocking rule. It is also the number that tells you least about whether a particular fish can live in a particular tank.

Same gallons, different tank

Volume is one measurement standing in for three, and the three do different jobs.

Length multiplied by width also gives you the surface area, which is where gas exchange happens. Two tanks holding the same volume with different surface areas are not equivalent homes, and the taller one is the worse one for oxygen.

The comparisons that make it obvious

A 20 long and a 20 high hold the same water. The long is typically thirty inches end to end; the high is typically twenty-four. Six inches does not sound like much until you try to keep a shoal that wants to move in a straight line, or two fish that need to be at opposite ends of something.

A 55 and a 75 are both typically forty-eight inches long, but the 75 is considerably deeper front to back. The extra twenty gallons buy floor area and turning room rather than length — which is exactly the right upgrade for cichlids and bottom dwellers, and makes much less difference to a shoal of rainbowfish that was already using the full forty-eight inches.

Cube tanks are the extreme case. A cube holds a respectable volume in a small footprint, which is excellent for a planted display and poor for anything that swims.

Why this site publishes a minimum length

Every species entry in the database carries a minimum tank length alongside a minimum volume, and the stocking calculator checks both. The length is frequently the binding constraint.

The pattern shows up clearly in the larger fish. Bala sharks and clown loaches are both listed at 125 gallons and 72 inches, and the length is the harder requirement to meet — a 125 in the wrong proportions still does not give a foot-long shoaling fish room to move. A common pleco needs 150 gallons and the same six feet, having been sold at three inches and reaching eighteen. A rainbow shark is 55 gallons and 48 inches, and it is the four feet that keeps it from claiming the entire floor.

Congo tetras illustrate the softer version of the same point. Nothing dramatic happens in a short tank — they just stay grey. They need open length to look like anything at all.

The exception that proves it

Height is not always decoration. Angelfish need height as much as length — eighteen inches minimum — because a deep-bodied fish with trailing fins in a shallow tank is a fish that cannot hold itself normally.

Hatchetfish are a different kind of exception: they live in the top inch of the water regardless of how deep it is, so depth is irrelevant to them and surface area is everything. Both cases point the same way — read the species, not the gallons.

Surface area and oxygen

Oxygen enters the water at the surface and carbon dioxide leaves there. A tall narrow tank has less surface per gallon than a long shallow one, so it supports less gas exchange for the same volume of water.

It is not a hard limit — surface agitation from a filter return or an air stone increases the effective exchange considerably, which is covered in filtration turnover. But it does mean the tall tank is relying on equipment for something the long tank gets for free, and equipment fails.

The rule of thumb, and why it is not in the database

You will often see a guideline that a tank should be some multiple of a fish's adult length — six times, eight times, ten times, depending on who is writing. The principle is sound: a fish needs enough room to turn and to build up speed. The multiple is not agreed, and applying one number across a hatchetfish and a red tail shark produces nonsense in both directions.

Rather than pick a multiplier and pretend it is settled, the database publishes a per-species minimum length. Where keepers genuinely disagree about a species — and they do, notably about how much room an oscar needs, where plenty of experienced people argue 100 gallons is the honest minimum for one — the note says so instead of asserting a figure.

Two practical consequences

Choose the footprint first. Decide what you want to keep, take the largest minimum length on the list, and then buy the tank that has it. Volume follows from the footprint; the reverse does not work.

Check what the floor can take. Fresh water weighs about 8.34 pounds per gallon, so a 75-gallon tank is well over 600 pounds of water before you add glass, stand, substrate and rock. A long tank spreads that load across more joists than a tall one of the same volume — one more reason the footprint is the more consequential measurement.
